Levi served as a private in Company D, 28th North Carolina Infantry. Current evidence supports a late-war service chronology rather than service dating back to Gettysburg.
Captured during the collapse of the Petersburg defenses.
POW records document his movement through City Point before confinement at Point Lookout, Maryland.
Swore the Oath of Allegiance and was released.
His son Andrew J. Lipe left a family account describing Levi's return home around the Fourth of July.
Gettysburg connection
Regiment only. The 28th North Carolina Infantry fought at Gettysburg in July 1863, but current evidence does not prove that Levi was in service then or personally fought there. The previous version of this page incorrectly presented the regiment's Gettysburg story as Levi's own and has been corrected.
Family
Born 11 February 1823 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Later lived in Stanly County. Wife: Elizabeth Hatley. He died in 1884.
